Your guide to Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur (or —KL, as the locals say) is the capital of Malaysia. The days when it all began as mud flats and tin deposits (in the 1850's) seem unimaginable compared to it's current state. You will find many traces of history in the beautifully preserved architecture.

Kuala Lumpur, called just KL by locals, is the federal capital of Malaysia and its largest city. It sits at the centre of a number of satellite cities that feed the vibrant commercial and cultural life, and is considered the place to go to find your fortune.

Kuala Lumpur literally means “muddy confluence” and is named for its location near where the rivers Klang and Gombak intersect. It was established in the 1850s as a mining centre, and its history as a place for fortune seekers has contributed to the mixing pot culture that exists there today. Malay, Chinese, and Indian are the strongest influences.

The city is a mixture of ultra modern architecture, like the Petronas Towers skyscrapers, as well as colonial buildings and hundreds of temples and mosques. You find the most modern shopping centres and world’s cheapest five-star hotels sitting alongside bustling street markets and lively night spots. For such a big city, there is also a surprising amount of green, from leafy canopies of Banyan trees to the famous Batu Caves. In this bustling and eclectic city there is something for everyone..
