Of course, travelling in Africa isn’t all about sight-seeing or relaxing on sandy beaches. There's activity and adventure to be enjoyed too.
For starters, visitors can head to Tanzania and climb the dormant volcano, Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at an impressive 5,895 metres above sea level, it is the largest mountain in Africa and the largest free-standing mountain in the world. Hikers are provided with no fewer than seven trekking routes to choose from.
Staying closer to the ground, Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, provides a host of white-knuckle opportunities. From white-water rafting to bungee jumping and even swimming right up to the edge of the world’s largest waterfall, there’s plenty of options to get an adrenaline kick.
A real challenge is presented by the world’s largest hot desert, the Sahara. For some, it’s a stunning place to leisurely trek across on the back of a camel, while for others it’s a place to spend six days, running the equivalent of six marathons by taking part in the annual Marathon Des Sables.
And, of course, a visit to Africa wouldn’t be complete without going on safari. There are numerous destinations where lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, leopards, rhinos, hippos and the like can be seen in their natural habitats, for an unforgettable experience. Among the most popular are in Kenya’s Masai Mara, the Kruger National Park in South Africa and a canoeing safari in the Lower Zambezi in Zambia.
