As a continent, Africa is an incredibly diverse place to visit, with rich cultural offerings, breathtaking landscapes and exciting city destinations - and that’s just for starters. You can also take in a variety of languages, religions, geographical marvels and a wealth of history too, not forgetting huge sporting fixtures, unforgettable safaris and the only fully remaining relic of the Seven Wonders of the World. The second-largest continent after Asia, both in terms of geography and population, it’s little wonder there are such a plethora of things to experience in Africa. But there are some sights and experiences not to be missed for any intrepid explorer, or even casual holiday-maker, which deserve a spot on any bucket list.
It would be remiss not to start off with the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to remain mostly intact, the Great Pyramid of Giza. Located in Egypt and just 15 kilometres from the capital Cairo, it is both the oldest and largest of the three pyramids at the site. From one of the ancient Seven Wonders to a new one. Heading down into South Africa, one of the continent’s most prominent landmarks can be found overlooking Cape Town. Table Mountain is probably the most iconic spot in the country and among those in the whole of Africa too. But it’s more than just a mountain. The area also boasts rich biodiversity, much of which cannot be found elsewhere. Visitors can reach the top via a cable car, which has seen more than 22 million users since it opened in 1929. For a more relaxed vibe, Africa is blessed with some of the world’s most stunning beaches too. Off the west coast of Senegal in the North Atlantic lies the archipelago of Cape Verde. With its 10 islands, visitors will find a blend of African, Brazilian and Iberian cultures not to be missed.
Of course, travelling in Africa isn’t all about sight-seeing or relaxing on sandy beaches. There's activity and adventure to be enjoyed too. For starters, visitors can head to Tanzania and climb the dormant volcano, Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at an impressive 5,895 metres above sea level, it is the largest mountain in Africa and the largest free-standing mountain in the world. Hikers are provided with no fewer than seven trekking routes to choose from. Staying closer to the ground, Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, provides a host of white-knuckle opportunities. From white-water rafting to bungee jumping and even swimming right up to the edge of the world’s largest waterfall, there’s plenty of options to get an adrenaline kick. A real challenge is presented by the world’s largest hot desert, the Sahara. For some, it’s a stunning place to leisurely trek across on the back of a camel, while for others it’s a place to spend six days, running the equivalent of six marathons by taking part in the annual Marathon Des Sables. And, of course, a visit to Africa wouldn’t be complete without going on safari. There are numerous destinations where lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, leopards, rhinos, hippos and the like can be seen in their natural habitats, for an unforgettable experience. Among the most popular are in Kenya’s Masai Mara, the Kruger National Park in South Africa and a canoeing safari in the Lower Zambezi in Zambia.
