American Airlines is considered to be the world's largest airline in terms of the number of passengers carried each year, as well as by fleet size.
Alongside its regional partners, the airline operates a large domestic and international network, with nearly 6,800 flights a day travelling to over 50 countries.
The company is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, although it has nine other hubs including in New York, Miami and Chicago.
Factoring in ground staff, pilots and cabin crew, as well as maintenance staff, figures showed that in 2020 American Airlines employed over 130,000 people across its ten US bases.
As of May 2020, the airline operated 871 aircraft, a mixture of Boeing and Airbus, with the majority being the narrow-bodied Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800. Although historically the company operated far more Boeing craft, it merged with US Airways, which favoured Airbus - thus shifting the balance operated by the newly amalgamated company. It is now the largest operator of the A320 series in the world.
