About Africa World Airlines

Africa World Airlines is a Ghanaian carrier, with a main hub at Kotoka International Airport and headquarters in Accra, Ghana's capital city. The airline was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between Ghana's Social Security and National Insurance Trust, SAS Finance Group, China's Hainan Airlines and the China-Africa Development Fund.

Using a fleet of eight Embraer ERJ-145LI narrow-body jet aircraft, Africa World Airlines operates short-haul routes to Ghana's main domestic airport, Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria, the Liberian capital Monrovia, Sierra Leone's Freetown and the capital of Côte d'Ivoire, Abidjan. In 2019, the airline signed an agreement with South African Airways to operate additional flights across West Africa and there are additional agreements in place with Emirates, Air Burkina, Cabo Verde Airlines and Brussels Airlines to connect passengers further afield.

Africa World Airlines became a full IATA member in October 2017 and has won multiple domestic awards for its customer experience and marketing.

Check-in information

Check-in can be done at the airport. A government-issued ID card will be required for check-in. The airline may reject photocopies and/or phone snapshots of such ID cards.

Online Check-in:

AWA has yet to offer online check-in on any of their flights. Passengers must check-in at their respective airport terminal at the moment.

Airport Check-in:

AWA check-in counters open for all passengers 2 hours before scheduled departure time and closes 40 minutes (domestic flights) to the departure time. International flight check-ins terminate 1 hour before departure.

The airline reserves the right to deny passengers boarding where they fail to check-in within the stipulated time.

Passengers on its international flights will be required to produce their international passports as a means of identification.

Food on board

AWA does not serve meals on any of its flights (no special meal/snack options.). It offers complimentary hot beverages on some domestic routes and serves snacks on all routes. Snack options on regional flights include fresh fruits juices from the Vida e Caffe menu and croissants, biscuits and either meat or fish pies.

Cabin classes

AWA operates a one-cabin, two-class fare aircraft, featuring both Economy and Premium Economy Classes. Seats can’t be pre-booked on the airline at this time. They are assigned at the airports.

The airline’s Embraer 145 Jets offers 50 seats and a flight crew of 2 Cabin Attendants, A Captain and a First Officer.

Premium Economy Class feature port side seats (single-row seats). Passengers travelling in a company get the first two rows of twin seats,

AWA Economy seats are designed to offer up great comfort at a reduced cost.

Baggage information

Hand Luggage:

All passengers are allowed to carry one piece of hand luggage with a maximum weight of 5kg, alongside a handbag/laptop bag. The airline encourages the use of soft-sided baggage that would readily fit in the overhead bin and under the seat in front of you.

Anything extra will need to be checked-in at a cost of 4GHC per each kg on all domestic routes and US$3 per kilo on its regional routes.

Checked Luggage:

Economy passengers are entitled to one piece of checked-in baggage allowances, while Premium and Valued passengers are allowed two bags. All checked-in luggage mustn’t weigh more than 23kg.

Infants & Children:

The airline has no peculiar checked baggage requirement for this category of travellers at the moment.
