Founded in 1927, Iberia Airlines is the flag carrier airline for Spain. Based at Madrid-Barajas Airport, it operates a network of international flights. It currently flies to 64 international and 26 domestic destinations.
Flights began on 28th June 1927, and in less than a year the Spanish government had commissioned the airline for its Madrid to Barcelona postal flights. Operating almost as a state-backed monopoly until 1946, Iberia Airlines became the first carrier to offer flights between Europe and South America after World War II.
It gradually expanded its fleet and services throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1953, regular flights began between Spain and the USA. During the 1970s, a growing number of transatlantic flights saw Iberia Airlines bring Boeing 747 and Douglas DC-10 jumbo jets into service.
It was announced in 2010 that Iberia Airlines and British Airways intended to merge, forming the International Airlines Group. Both airlines have retained their brand names.
