KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

About KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

KLM is The Netherlands’ flag-carrying airline. The company was founded in 1919 and  celebrated its centenary in 2019 with a lavish event attended by senior government figures as well as employees.

KLM's first flight was from Croydon Airport in the UK to Amsterdam in 1920, and the airline has gone from strength to strength since then. It is the world’s oldest international airline which still operates under its original name.

In the post-war period, the government attempted to secure a controlling share in KLM, although was limited to becoming a minority shareholder. After a period of financial difficulty in the 1950s, the government increased its ownership to two thirds - effectively nationalising the company. Following a 2003 merger, KLM then became part of the

Air France-KLM group, and is the largest airline operating from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, which is the third busiest airport in Europe.

Alongside numerous cargo services, KLM operates passenger services to 145 destinations around the world.
