Malaysia Airlines is the country's flag-carrying airline, which operates primarily from its hub at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, with a small number of flights also departing from its secondary hubs in the cities of Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. The airline serves a wide range of destinations across Asia, Australasia and Europe.
The origins of the airline date back to the 1930s, when Malayan Airways Limited was founded in Singapore. It was renamed as Malaysian Airways in 1963, before briefly becoming Malaysia-Singapore Airlines, after the separation of Singapore. It eventually became Malaysian Airlines in 1972.
The airline received numerous awards throughout the 2000s and 2010s, however, it lost out during the rise of low-cost carriers in the region. It suffered significant losses and resorted to cutting a number of its long-haul flights to the Americas and Africa. After many years of partial state ownership, the Malaysian government bought out remaining minority shareholder in 2014, effectively nationalising the airline.
