TAP Air Portugal

About TAP Air Portugal

TAP Portugal is the flag carrier airline of Portugal, with its hub based at Lisbon Airport. TAP stands for Transportes Aéreos Portugueses, meaning Portuguese Air Transport. It has a fleet of 100 largely Airbus planes, with only one in five made by other manufacturers.

The airline was established in 1945, just as the Second World War was coming to an end, with its first-ever flight taking place the following year in 1946 from Lisbon to Madrid. The airline was privatised in 1953, but it is now 50% owned by the Portuguese government.

TAP operates an average of 10,000 flights each month to almost 100 destinations around the world - to 34 countries in total.

In addition to 50% ownership by Portugal's government, 45% of the airline is owned by the Atlantic Gateway Consortium and 5% by collaborators and employees as a benefit for their level of service.
