Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport currently holds the title of the world's busiest, having seen more than 107 million passengers pass through its doors in 2018.
Situated in Atlanta and within a two-hour flight of 80% of the population of the USA, Hartsfield-Jackson is a major connecting hub, as well as port of entry to North America.
It is also the primary location for US carrier Delta Air Lines, the world's largest airline hub.
The airport opened in 1926 and was then known as Candler Field, after the former owner and Coca-Cola boss Asa Candler. It was renamed Atlanta Municipal Airport in 1942.
In 1971, it was again given a new title - William B. Hartsfield Atlanta Airport - after a former mayor of the city who died that same year.
Six years later, construction began on a new terminal building, overseen by Mayor Maynard Jackson, and was opened in 1980.
Following Jackson's death in 2003, Atlanta City Council voted to honour him by renaming the airport Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Today, it operates with five runways and two terminals.
