Cairo International Airport is the principal airport for Egypt. It's located just under 9.5
miles north-east of Cairo city centre, in Heliopolis. It's the second busiest airport in Africa.
It began life as the US-built Payne Airfield, during World War Two to serve the allied forces.
After American forces left the airfield, it was taken over by civilian authorities. In 1963
it became Cairo International Airport - CAI.
Today the airport is made up of three terminals and a departure hall dedicated to private
and executive flights. 55 airlines offer commercial passenger services to and from the
airport.
There are a number of ways to travel to and from the airport. A limousine service picks up
from the terminals, offering three different classes of travel including microbuses for up
to seven passengers.
A city bus service can be accessed from outside Terminal 1. These connect to transport
hubs such as Tahrir Square.

The Cairo International Airport offers passengers an opportunity to enjoy locally brewed beers, such as Sakara. While some of the shops sell espresso and small bites you can relax with a bottle of beer between flights.
The Heineken Bar is tucked behind security and customs, offering passengers light and local brews on tap, including an international menu.
Before you leave Cairo International Airport, you can shop at some of the boutiques that sell affordable accessories. Do not hesitate to buy gold-plated earrings, a handful of red and yellow bangles, and silk scarves.
The business center in Terminal 1 offers passengers fax services and computers. There is a choice for the VIP lounges, which offer a range of business services upon request. The Novotel Cairo Airport Hotel offers guests business facilities and meeting rooms.
