The only international airport in Qatar, Hamad is situated just south of the capital Doha.
Hamad International Airport is relatively new, having opened in 2014 to replace Doha International Airport. This was, however, five years later than the date originally scheduled.
The airport was initially called New Doha International Airport but was later renamed after the former Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
It is the primary hub for Qatar Airways and currently serves just short of 39 million passengers per year. Expansion projects are underway to enable the airport to accommodate more than 50 million passengers per year in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
A 10,000-square metre tropical garden is set to be part of the expansion, starring a 268-metre tall water feature.
Another popular feature of the airport is a giant bronze statue of a teddy bear, known locally as ‘Lamp Bear’ because it has its head in a lamp.

Also available are a selection of anti-jet lag massages, rejuvenating facials, and body treatments.
If you are the adventure type, you can check out the sand dunes near Khor Al Adaid, also known as the Inland Sea. It is one of Qatar’s most impressive natural wonders. It is 60km from Doha so you’ll need at least 5-hours and as such, it’s only advisable if your layover is more extended, so you have time on your hands.
