Leonardo da Vinci International Airport - also known as Rome-Fiumicino - is the main airport serving Italy's capital city and the surrounding region.
With more than 43 million passengers per year, it is the busiest airport in Italy and the eighth-largest in Europe, behind the likes of London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Amsterdam Schiphol.
The airport was originally developed to relieve pressure from Rome Ciampino Airport during the 1960 Olympic Games but opened as a fully functioning airport in its own right in 1961. Initially a two-runway operation, it replaced Rome Ciampino as the city's primary airport, with Ciampino taking only mostly low-cost airlines. A third runway was added later that same decade and today four runways are in use.
Interestingly, during the construction of Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, the remains of Caligula's Giant Ship were uncovered, with the site previously being used as a Roman port.
The airport was given its name in honour of Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance polymath who developed a flying machine with wings in 1480.

If you are a fashion lover, you can grab the latest trends and all the must-haves of the current season by the most famous fashion brands at the Airport. You will find several boutiques in the Tax-Free Mall of the international boarding area.
A handful of eateries stay open for 24-hours at the Airport. A good number of restaurants, cafes, and to-go bars serve up some traditional Italian goodness. You can sample some wines, pasta, and pizza. There's also steak, coffee, seafood, sandwiches, and the regular foods if you'd rather stick to what's familiar.
Located directly on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this town is a safer choice if you want to leave the Airport but not stray too far. You can stroll around the streets as you take in the sea breeze. Sample the local food from the local restaurants or visit the Ostia Antica archaeological park
