Located 30 miles to the west of downtown Washington DC in Chantilly, Virginia, Washington Dulles International Airport is the largest of three major airports in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.
With more than 24 million passengers passing through each year, Washington Dulles serves in excess of 125 worldwide destinations, making it the 25th busiest airport in the whole of the United States.
Washington Dulles currently runs a four-runway operation, meaning it can handle up to 600,000 aircraft movements in a single year.
Named after former Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, the airport was opened in 1962 and the main terminal - designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen - is itself something of a local landmark.
The airport serves as a hub for United Airlines, the world's third-largest carrier, and also hosts airlines including Air Canada, Air China, British Airways, Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.
