Located 23 miles north of downtown Houston in Texas, George Bush Intercontinental Airport is the second-busiest airport in the state. Serving more than 45 million passengers each year, it is also the 15th biggest airport in the US.
In 2017, George Bush Intercontinental became the first airport in the whole of North America to provide non-stop flights to every inhabited continent, after Air New Zealand began operations there. However, shortly after, it lost this claim after Atlas Air flights moved to Luanda, but regained it again in late 2019 when Ethiopian Airlines began running a service to Togo.
Originally known as Houston Intercontinental Airport, it opened in 1969 and was renamed after the 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush, in 1997.
The airport operates today with five runways and five terminal buildings.
