Originally opened in 1912 as a military airfield and then known as Yesilkoy Airport, it was upgraded to an airport in 1953.
It wasn't until 1980 that the airport was renamed Istanbul Ataturk Airport after Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, not only the first President but also the founder of the Republic of Turkey, who helped to reform the nation in the 1920s.
In 2015, Istanbul Ataturk saw more than 60 million passengers through its doors, making it the 11th-busiest airport in the world, while in 2017 it was also Europe's fifth-busiest airport.
However, with Ataturk Airport being unable to expand due to lack of space for a new runway, it closed to commercial passengers in April 2019 following the opening of Istanbul Airport. It does, however, remain open for cargo, maintenance, business flights and general aviation.
The final commercial flight, a Turkish Airlines service to Singapore, departed Istanbul Ataturk Airport on 6 April 2019.
