Located to the south-east of Manhattan in the borough of Queens, John F. Kennedy International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in the United States.
With four runways and six terminals, the airport serves more than 62 million passengers a year, with almost 90 airlines travelling in and out across the world. It was originally built with 10 terminals and retained these until the late 1990s and still had seven until May 2013.
During construction, it was known as Idlewild Airport, but its name was changed to New York International Airport when it opened in 1948. It was later renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport following the assassination of the former president in 1963.
Both Delta Air Lines and American Airlines use JFK as a base, while it is also a focus city for JetBlue, British Airways and Norwegian Air Shuttle.
while you wait for your flight
JFK has several lounges, and some of them you can enter by paying at the door, purchasing a lounge pass, or through a lounge membership program. You can relax comfortably, and some of the lounges have pay-per-use options. Some include food and drink in the entry price, while some have shower facilities.
Terminal 5 has an enclosed children's play area with some toddler activity and toys. The play area offers a short-term distraction for kids, which allows travelling parents a break. The interactive play toys are bright and colourful so that the kids can make the most out of the layover.
If you have a long layover time, you can explore some of NYC's sights and sounds. You can see art collections, a boat ride through Manhattan, or go to Central Park. Best to pick one or two activities though so you can have enough time to go back to the airport.
