South Africa's O.R. Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Gauteng, is the busiest international airport in Africa and has the capacity to serve up to 28 million passengers every year.
The airport is the primary airport for international and domestic travel in and out of South Africa and serves as the headquarters of South African Airways. O. R. Tambo International Airport is also one of the few airports in the Africa-Middle East region that hosts non-stop flights to each of the six inhabited continents.
The airport was originally founded in 1952 and was named Jan Smuts International Airport after the late Prime Minister of South Africa. Unlike most international airports, O.R. Tambo sits approximately 1,700 metres above sea level, where the air is unusually thin. Due to this low air pressure, the runways are longer than they are in most airports so that the aeroplanes can reach adequate airspeed.
Over half of passengers travelling from South Africa will fly out of O.R. Tambo International Airport, making it one of the busiest in the world.
while you wait for your flight
There’s a wide selection of cafes and restaurants in the public concourse and holding lounges of the international and domestic arrivals and departures halls at the airport. At Terminals 1 and 2 are Nando's, Steers, and Juicy Lucy. Terminals 3 and 4 have De Havilland, Isikhonkwane Restaurant, and Wimpy, while Terminal 5 has the Flying Fox and the Gateway Bar.
The Airport's duty-free retail shopping mall offers a mix of international brands of sportswear, alcohol, perfume, cigars, jewelry, toys, and electronic goods. You'll also find a variety of handcrafted African artefacts for your souvenirs. The main duty-free shop, Big Five Duty-Free, is second in size only to the one at London's Heathrow Airport.
With more than 6 hours and an adventurous spirit, you can head out to Johannesburg for sightseeing. Explore Constitution Hill or tour Old Fort. Sample some local food at Pata Pata, or Mama Mexicana then wander the streets for local souvenirs.
