Known colloquially as L.A.X. after its IATA airport code, Los Angeles International Airport is the largest in California and the second busiest in the whole of the United States.
The airport sees more than 84 million passengers travel through its doors each year and handles nearly 700,000 aircraft movements.
Located in the Westchester area of Los Angeles, just 18 kilometres outside of central LA, LAX is a hub for four passenger airlines, with Delta, United, American and Alaska calling it home. It is also a focus city for Qantas, Air New Zealand, Volaris, Southwest Airlines, Allegiant Air and Norwegian Air Shuttle. Combined, this is more than any other US airport.
The airport opened in 1930 under the name Mines Field, and was later renamed Los Angeles Airport in 1941. Eight years later, it obtained its 'International' status.
Today, the airport operates with an impressive nine passenger terminals and four runways.
