Once a racecourse in the south of England, London Gatwick Airport has become the UK's second-largest airport, and until 2017 was the world's busiest single-runway airport.
More than 46 million passengers use Gatwick each year to travel to over 230 different destinations, across 70 countries. It can handle up to 55 movements an hour on just one runway, although it also has a shorter standby runway which can be brought into operation in an emergency.
Gatwick, as we know it today, opened in 1958 with its South Terminal and rapidly gained a number of airlines. The North Terminal opened in 1988 and is now a hub for easyJet.
Nestled between the towns of Horley and Crawley on the Surrey-West Sussex border, there's no actual place called Gatwick. The airport got its name as the area was previously used as a goat farm - 'Gat' meaning 'goat' and 'wyck' meaning 'farm'.
while you wait for your flight
Visit the Gatwick Aviation Museum, it's located on the boundary of the airport. If you have at least 8 hours till your next flight, you can take the 35 mins train to London's Victoria station. While there, you can stroll through Covent Garden or ride the London Eye.
Gatwick is home to a wide range of shops at the airport, including international boutiques and the usual airport staples. Try out make-up, pick up a book to read on the plane, get souvenirs, candy, and whiskeys in the Duty-Free. A few shops stay open 24-hours, including most Duty-Free areas.
If you're not into shopping or sightseeing and would rather enjoy a more quiet, relaxed environment, London Gatwick has a few lounges for that. The airport lounges provide access to all travellers, regardless of the airline or class flown. At a fee, you will get shower facilities, food, Wi-Fi, and drinks

The two passenger terminals at Gatwick Airport are a long way apart' thus, it is not possible to walk between them. A free monorail train service shuttles between the two terminals every 2 to 3 minutes.
