The UK's largest airport, serving more than 80 million passengers a year and handling in excess of 477,000 aircraft movements, London Heathrow is also the second busiest airport in the world.
Situated to the west of central London, near to Hayes, Hounslow and Stanwell, the airport is one of six major airfields in the capital.
London Heathrow Airport was built in 1929 - then just a small airfield known as Great West Aerodrome. Its expansion began 15 years later in 1944 when it was intended for use for military aircraft heading to the Far East.
However, by the time building was nearing completion, World War II had ended. However, the British government decided to continue the expansion of Heathrow, with the idea of it becoming a civil airport.
The building works were finally completed in 1946 and it was opened under the name of London Airport. It was later renamed Heathrow Airport in 1966.
Today, Heathrow has two runways and four operational terminals, the most recent of which - Terminal Five - opened in 2008 and has since been the main base for British Airways.
