London Luton Airport (IATA code: LTN) is the smallest of the London airports. Previously named Luton International Airport, it is located 28 miles north of the centre of London, which is just under a half an hour on the train from Luton Airport to St Pancras in the middle of the city.
Although the airport currently handles over 16 million passengers a year (making it the fifth busiest airport in the UK), there are currently plans to increase the capacity to 32 million by 2039. This comes from a package of upgrades, including the development of a second terminal and better rail links, to lift the pressure on the current shuttle bus service.
The airport was initially opened in 1938 for public use, before being claimed by the Air Force during World War II. Luton Airport restarted commercial operations in 1952 and has been growing in both size and usage ever since.
