Manchester Airport was opened in June 1938 and has since grown to become the third-largest airport in the United Kingdom, behind London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
The airport, which boasts two runways and three terminals, handles in excess of 28 million passengers each year and sees more than 200,000 aircraft movements. Other than Heathrow, it is the only airport in the UK to operate with two runways of more than 2,999 metres in length.
Situated 14 kilometres south of Manchester city centre, the airport actually sits between the towns of Altrincham and Wilmslow, but is connected to Manchester by good public transport links.
Locally, the airport is known as Ringway Airport, which was its original name back in the 1930s. It was also called RAF Ringway throughout World War II when it was used as a base for the Royal Air Force.
There is currently a major expansion project underway, which will enable Terminal 2 to handle 35 million passengers each year. The work is scheduled to finish by 2024.
while you wait for your flight
For parents travelling with their kids, there's a play area for kids located at Terminal 2, Airside, Departure Gate 213. Children can play, jump around, and burn off all their energy before their flight.
With a longer layover time, watch planes take-off, enjoy a restaurant with a view, get souvenirs or go on a guided tour of BA's flagship Concorde at this park. There is a bus link between the Manchester Airport train station and the park. It is less than 3 miles from the park.
There are lounges at Manchester Airport, where you can relax and unwind regardless of what class you are flying. You can access the airport lounge by purchasing a pass, paying at the door, or through a lounge membership program. Pre-book from GBP 19.99 per person to relax and unwind at any of the lounges available.
