Situated next to the charming suburb of Tullamarine, Melbourne airport is the second busiest airport in Australia. The international travel hub has four terminals and is large enough that it has its own suburb and postcode.
The airport opened in 1970, replacing the old Essendon airport, as the longer runways allowed for jet travel. The first Boeing 747 flight touched down there in 1971.
The main international travel airport serving Melbourne is as busy as you would expect. More than 35 million passengers a year pass through to 33 domestic destinations, as well as a variety of international locations. Melbourne also handles the largest amount of domestic freight of any Australian airport.
The site of Melbourne airport, known locally as Tullamarine or just 'Tulla', lies around 14 miles north of Melbourne city centre, putting it within easy driving distance for travellers eager to experience the coastal city.
It is the premier arrival destination for anyone looking to visit the city and surrounding areas.
