Serving seven million passengers a year, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the seventh busiest airport in Africa.
The airport is located 18 kilometres south-east of the Kenyan capital Nairobi, in the city's Embakasi suburb.
Jomo Kenyatta was opened in 1958 and was then known as Embakasi Airport. Sir Evelyn Baring, Kenya's last colonial governor, officially opened the airport, although it was initially planned that Queen Elizabeth - The Queen Mother - would attend the ceremony. However, due to a delay to her own flight, she was unable to conduct the opening.
The airport expanded in 1978 with the construction of a second terminal, opened by President Kenyatta. Embakasi Airport was renamed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following the president's death just five months later.
Jomo Kenyatta currently operates with a single runway and two terminals. Expansion plans for a second runway were approved in 2017, but just two years later the Kenyan government shelved the proposals to concentrate on expanding the terminal buildings.
