Newcastle International Airport (NCL) lies 6.5 miles north of the city of Newcastle in
north-east England. It's the second busiest airport in northern England after
Manchester and the 11th busiest in the UK.
Its easy access and public transport links make it a popular choice with people in
northern England.
It originally opened in 1935 as Woolsington Aerodrome and had a grass runway. The
1960s saw a new runway built and an air traffic control tower was added too. As yearly
passenger numbers topped 1 million, it was renamed Newcastle International Airport.
The 1980s saw further growth and the arrival of duty-free shops, check-in desks
and catering.
Today, around 5.3 million passengers use Newcastle International Airport-NCL. 14
airlines operate flights to and from NCL, with the most popular destinations being
London-Heathrow, Alicante and Amsterdam.
The airport is directly connected to the Tyne and Wear Metro. Its station is in the
northern terminus on the green line and frequent services run to both Newcastle and
Sunderland city centres.
