Located around 60 kilometres to the east of central Tokyo, Narita International Airport is the city's second busiest airport, after Haneda International Airport.
Narita was established in 1978 and currently serves around 44 million passengers per year, a growth of more than 15 million since 2011. The airport also handles more than two million tonnes of cargo every year, making it the world's tenth-busiest freight hub.
This is despite legislation stating the airport cannot operate between midnight and 06:00 to reduce the noise impact on the local community.
There are two runways at the airport, along with three terminals, and its main runway - at 4 kilometres long - is the joint-longest in Japan, alongside that at Osaka's Kansai International Airport.
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways both have major hubs located at Narita International,
while freight carrier Nippon Cargo Airlines is also based out of the airport, along with Jetstar
Japan and Peach, two low-cost carriers.
