Handling more than 56 million passengers per year, San Francisco International Airport is the seventh busiest in the United States of America, just behind New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. After LAX, it is also the second-largest in California.
San Francisco Airport was opened in 1927 as something of an experimental project but expanded to seven times its original size within just three years. In 1931, the name was changed from the original Mills Field Municipal Airport to San Francisco Airport. But it wasn't until after the end of World War II that it became known as an international airport when overseas flights became more popular.
Today, the airport operates with four runways and four terminals. It is also home to 'SFO Museum', which was opened in 1980, becoming the first museum to be housed within an international airport. Visitors often arrive early to view the temporary exhibitions and permanent artwork that is on display
while you wait for your flight
The airport usually offers exhibitions on cultural, art, historical, and scientific topics. SFO Museum presents approximately forty exhibitions throughout the terminals annually. These can be found at Terminal 3 pre-security.
The airport's duty-free retail features a wide range of well-known stores selling famous brands such as Chalo, Burberry, Michael Kors, Longchamp, Gucci, and many more. At the airport's 49 Mile Market, you can grab magazines, books, souvenirs, sundries, snacks, beverages, and grab-and-go food. You'll find this at International Terminal: Gate A2 and Gate G92.
There are three self-guided tours available at San Francisco airport that are fun for children of all ages. Check them out at Terminal 2 Pre-Security and Terminal 3 Pre-Security. You can view the itineraries online and on iPad kiosks at the Information Booths.
