London Stansted Airport is located 42 miles to the northeast of central London in the
Uttlesford district of Essex.
It has one passenger terminal, based near the village of Stansted Mountfitchet, and
began life as an RAF base during the Second World War. Commercial operations began
in 1966, with holiday charter operators basing themselves there to escape higher costs
at Heathrow and Gatwick.
Popular with budget airlines, there are now 23 commercial operators offering flights to
and from London Stansted Airport - STN. Its three most popular destination are Dublin,
Edinburgh and Belfast International. With nearly 25 million passengers every year it's
now the UK's third most popular airport.
Stansted Airport Railway station, situated in the main terminal just below the concourse,
links the airport with central London. The service operates every fifteen minutes and takes
between 45 and 53 minutes. Services also run to Birmingham and Norwich.
