Opened in 1931, Vancouver International Airport has since grown to become Canada's second busiest airport after Toronto Pearson International. Annually, Vancouver International handles more than 25 million passengers and in excess of 300,000 aircraft movements, making it the world's 60th busiest airport.
Located on the reclaimed land of Sea Island, it is also incredibly close to downtown Vancouver, with just a 20-minute drive, or 30-minute subway ride, needed to cover the 16 kilometres into the city.
The airport is also very distinctive as it boasts two satellite exhibits from the Vancouver Aquarium, including the largest airport aquarium in the world. Opened in 2007, this can be found before security in the domestic terminal.
More than 850 species of marine life - including the bat star, various types of rockfish and the pacific sea nettle - can be seen in the 30,000-gallon tank, while the second exhibit upstairs is home to more than 100 moon jellyfish.
while you wait for your flight
The airport offers a wide range of cafes and restaurants for dining. You'll find a YVR restaurant that provides fresh food and snacks packaged especially for your flight in a travel-friendly bag. You can also sample West Coast specialties, healthy food options or Japanese bento boxes.
With more than 6 hours and an adventurous spirit, you can go hiking and biking at Stanley Park, eat local delicacies at Chinatown or browse the art galleries and collect some souvenirs. Check out World of Science with the kids then head to Granville Island.
The airport's duty-free retail shopping mall offers a mix of international brands of sportswear, alcohol, perfume, cigars, jewelry, toys and electronics. You can shop from the comfort of your living room and simply pick up your items on your way through the terminal.
