The story of Christmas has been told many times over the centuries, but there are still many things that we don’t know about this special day. Discover how the celebration of Christmas began in ancient Rome and learn about the origins of Santa Claus.
In the early days of Christianity, the birth of Jesus was celebrated as a major event. However, the date of his birth wasn’t known until much later. Because of this uncertainty, people started celebrating the birth of Jesus at different times throughout the year. One tradition that developed during this period was the gift exchange between children and adults called “The Christmastide.” This tradition eventually evolved into what we now call Christmas.
Christ mas trees were first introduced to Europe in the 15th century when German immigrants brought them back home from Turkey. At the time, these trees were used primarily as decorations rather than for heat.
In Germany, where the tradition of decorating houses with lights originated, the custom was called “Christkindlmarkt” (Christmas market). This term eventually became shortened to just “Christkindlesmarkt” (Christkindlemarkt) and then simply “Christkindelsmarkt”.
Candy canes were originally used as a symbol of good luck during the Middle Ages. They were also used as a symbol of chastity because they resembled a stick with a cross at one end.
In the early days of Christianity, carols were sung to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. These songs were called “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” (Glory to God in the Highest). Over time, these songs evolved into what we now call Christmas carols.
