Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, is the second most populous city in the Americas (behind Sao Paulo, Brazil). More than 20 million Mexicans call the megapolis home. It is a lofty city, sitting 2,240 metres above sea level, and also lofty in its ambitions to be one of those places where anything is possible, and dreams come true.
Occupied since the Aztec period, you can see layers of history as you explore the city. There are Aztec ruins such as the Tempo Mayor, overlayed by Spanish colonial churches and mansions, and sat alongside modern and contemporary architecture. Populating these eclectic buildings are numerous important museums, impressive modern art galleries, a great night life, and a culinary scene that will leave you bemoaning that there aren’t more meals in the day.
While many people describe Mexico City as having a renaissance, we should not forget that it has been a cultural hotspot, providing inspiration for the likes of Octavio Paz and Frida Kahlo (don’t forget to visit her museum). There are fascinating things to do in every corner of the city from catching a show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, cruising the canals at Xochimilco, and searching for treasures at the Sunday Lagunilla Flea Market.
