Your guide to Asuncion

Asunción is the commercial centre of Paraguay and its capital city. It's a city with an impressive 65% young population (under-30's). Its historic centre between Colón street and Antequera is quite walkable. There are a handful of attractions in that part of the city, but not the conventional ones. You'll find random sites like cathedral buildings, museums and a botanical garden.

The city has decent accommodation, but only a few are in the budget range. However, food, goods and services are generally affordable, thanks to the country's reputation as piracy and smuggling haven. It's a great destination to pick up some indigenous craft and artisan wares. Anything from carved wood, pottery, tooled leather, and, notably, the Paraguayan lace made of a spider's web called "Ñanduti''.

Depending on your location, you can reach its two main malls via taxis or the ubiquitous and cheap buses. The weather is often hot, especially during the South American summer. However, when it rains, it chucks it down in buckets. Flies, ants and especially mosquitoes are common, so come prepared with insect repellants.
