Nungwi Beach, Zanzibar

A traditional Masai village, Arusha, Tanzania.

From the endless savannah and palm-fringed beaches to the snow and glacial ice of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania is everyone's dream when they think of Africa.
Home to the towering Maasai warriors, this is a nation of over 120 different ethnic groups that embraces its rich multicultural heritage. It has 503 miles of unspoilt coastline and was once a favoured stop on ancient jewel and spice trading routes. These trading links helped make Tanzania outward-looking and open to global influences. That rich melting pot culture is one reason it's such an intoxicating place to visit. On the fringes of Lake Tanganyika on the far west of the country, you'll find chimpanzees in their natural habitat. As well as snow-capped peaks, the Serengeti National Park is the premier place in Africa to see big beasts roam across the open plain, just as they have for millennia. Also worth a visit is the Selous Game Reserve, the size of Switzerland and still relatively untouched by humans.
