Lufthansa, also known as Deutsche Lufthansa, is the largest German airline and second-largest European airline (by passengers carried). Its name derives from the German word 'luft' meaning 'air'.


Founded in 1953, the airline started out providing domestic flights between the main cities of Germany. By 1955, they began International flights around Europe. The purchase of Boeing 707s in the early sixties allowed the airline to travel further afield, to destinations such as New York and South Africa.


Since its beginning, Lufthansa has evolved into one of the largest airline fleets in the world. Referred to now as an Airline Group, it owns five additional major subsidiary airlines. As a group, Lufthansa owns over 700 aircraft, awarding it a place on the list of largest airline fleets in the world.


Currently flying to 207 international destinations in 78 different countries, Lufthansa is known for its comfort and quality of service.

Lufthansa’s check-in options include online,late night, mobile, machine, and the airport. With a click, you book a flight to your destination.

Online Check-in:

Passengers are expected to check-in online 23 hours before their scheduled flight departure.  They can select their seats, and print their boarding pass. Passengers conveniently check-in with the online option.  You either download or print out your boarding pass before your departure.

Mobile check-in:

With your tablet or smartphone, you download or print your mobile boarding pass. Check-in at least 23 hours before your scheduled departure time 

Check-in machine:

You don’t need long queues at the check-in desks.  Make use of the check-in machines at the airport.

Automated check-in:

Boarding pass is transferred automatically to passengers by email or text directly to their mobile devices 23 hours before their scheduled flight departure.

Late night check-in:

Check-in the evening before your scheduled flight departure. But not earlier than 23 hours before your scheduled departure.

Lufthansa offers its passengers quality and excellent gourmet cuisine. Passengers in First Class and Business Class enjoy meals served on fine china with a selection of wines. Additionally, passengers receive a welcome drink on board.

The airlines have special menus for kids, while those on short and medium-haul distance get different beverages and food.

Lufthansa offers a perfect service for a voyage discovery in its Economy, Premium Economy, Business, or First Class.

Economy Class:

Passengers enjoy a wide range of in-flight entertainment, comfortable leather seats, the slim construction of the backrests, and more legroom on short and medium-haul flights. On long-haul flights, the airline offers full seat cushions measuring over 40 cm and adjustable headrests on each seat. Meals are offered based on departure time and destination.

Premium Economy Class:

You explore the extras in the Lufthansa Premium Economy Class and its comfortable seating arrangement. Passengers have up to 50 percent extra personal space, a welcome drink, and two free baggage items weighing not more than 23 kg each. A cocktail table in your armrest gives you an extra luxury for your drinks. Enjoy an exclusive in-flight entertainment on your 11/12 inch monitor. Take time and select from the airline menu, and eat from fine china tableware.

Business Class:

As a Business Class passenger, the airline provides a wide selection of lounges at all major international airports for relaxation before boarding. To improve your sleeping time, Lufthansa provides an optimized night service on short/long-haul flights, departing after 20.00 hours and have a route duration of six to eight hours.

Passengers receive additional free baggage, priority boarding at the airport, and exclusive in-flight meals on board. Passengers arrive at their destinations, feeling more calm and relaxed due to luxury and innovation offered.

First Class:

Traveling First Class means indulging yourself in an extraordinary pampering by dedicated staff and high tech technologies.

A personal assistant at the airport greets First Class passengers. The airline offers excellent comfort and the red rose and the caviar service. Pampering begins with a valet parking service at the First Class Terminal in Frankfurt and the kerbside check-in at Terminal 2 in Munich.

As a First Class passenger, a chauffeur takes you straight to the First Class Lounges by limousine or exclusive people carrier. The in-flight entertainment offers a comprehensive selection of entertainment content.

Delight your taste buds with a Michelin-star standard cuisine arranged on Fine China tableware. Award-winning sommelier and ‘Master of Wine,’ Markus Del Monego creates mouth-watering meals for you.

On long-haul flights, wide seat cushions and adjustable headrests are available for every passenger. On-board entertainment includes a selection of TV programmes, international radio stations, in-flight magazines, and the latest movies.

Lufthansa operates the Piece Concept System for its baggage allowance.  Due to the new regulations at Germany aviation security checkpoints, Passengers only carry one piece of hand luggage. The airline ensures that every hand luggage that meets the rule is checked in free of charge.

Economy:

The airline allows a single carry-on not exceeding 8kg.

Premium Economy: 

The airline allows one carry-on weighing not more than 8kg.

Business:  

The airline allows two carry-on baggage, each not exceeding 8kg per passenger.

First Class: 

The airline allows two carry-on baggages, each not weighing more than 8kg per passenger.

In Economy/Premium Economy Class, baggage must not exceed a maximum of 32 kg and/or is larger than 158 cm (width X + height Y + depth up to a maximum of 292 cm).

In Business/First Class, baggage should not exceed a maximum dimension of 158 cm up to a maximum of 292 cm.

Items of baggage that exceed more than 32 kg can be sent as air freight.
