Established in 1147, the traditional fortress, revamped and renamed the Kremlin, sits in Red Square and is still at the heart of the city. Remains of the soviet state are scattered all over the city, and there is no shortage of museums where you can learn about the likes of Stain, Lenin, the Russian Revolution, and infamous Russian Gulags. There are also a number of old-style cafes and canteens that provide a throwback experience.

But, while Moscow has a dark past, it also has a glorious one. For centuries it has been a centre for art, ballet, music, and theatres, and all of these cultural wonders are alive and well in the city today.
