Etihad Airways, or Etihad for short, carries the flag of the United Arab Emirates, and the country’s second-largest airline after Emirates.
Based in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the airline is headquartered at Abu Dhabi International Airport, employing just under 25,000 people.
The airline was founded in 2003 when Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan wanted an airline for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Etihad has expanded into one of the world's largest long-haul carriers, with a 102 strong fleet that includes 10 Airbus A380s.
The first route was flown from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain, and now over 1,000 flights per week serve 81 destinations across the world.
Etihad also runs an airline alliance called Etihad Airways Partners, and owns a share in Virgin Australia.
The airline recently confirmed that, in contrast to Air France, it does not intend to retire its Airbus A380 fleet in response to the COVID pandemic.
