Monrovia is the capital city of Liberia and was established in 1822 as a settlement for African American and Caribbean former slaves starting a new life. This brought an influx of affluence into the area and newcomers dominated the local population. But this also led to revolt and war. Today the city is an interesting mix of cultures and a safe place to visit.
