Your guide to Mombasa

A large port city on the Indian Ocean coastline of Kenya, Mombasa is one of the country’s most popular tourist hot spots. Established in around 900, it has thrived for a millennium as a trade centre. A Swahili city, it has seen occupation by the Portuguese, Arabs, and British. It changes hands so often that it is also called Kisiwa Cha Mvita, which means Island of War.

Mombasa is also known locally as the white and blue city, as the majority of the city has been painted white with blue accents. The exception is Old Town, located on an island in a river delta, which is painted yellow. This is where you will find the Portuguese Fort Jesus and classic Islamic architecture. The culture is a blend of Indian, Arabic, and African, so you will find Hindu temples alongside mosques as you explore the streets.

Mombasa is famous for its gorgeous beaches. There are significant coral deposits in the area, which make a home for fascinating marine life. So, Mombasa is also a favourite with divers and snorkellers. The nightlife is also infamous. The area of the city known as Mtwapa is also called the village that never sleeps.
