Taipei, the northern capital of the small island of Taiwan, sits in a limbo at the crossroads of the world. Recognized by some as a part of China and others as an independent nation, it fuses traditional Chinese culture with Japanese, Southeast Asian and American influences to create a city that is unique.

While it is a modern city of skyscrapers, the 300-year history of the city is very visible through the Taoist temples, wooden board Japanese-era mansions, and the 20t​ h​ century military barracks. Around these important sites, it can feel like the city was thrown together in a hurry with a mishmash of design styles. But the result is a very liveable city with great public transport, lots of green spaces, and surprising public services such as courtesy umbrella’s on rainy days.

But Taiwan is definitely quirky. Expect cutesy kawaii Japanese style alongside themed restaurants, and unfathomable public art installations. From Taipei you can easily access other places in the country. Perhaps start with a hike up Elephant Mountain to look out over the sprawling city. Then see the rock formation at Yehliu Geological Park, and then go for a soak in the Beitou hot springs.
