Based in the historic city of Rome, Alitalia is Italy's leading airline. The name is made up of two Italian words - Ali, which means 'wings', and Italia which translates to 'Italy' in English.
The airline serves 97 destinations (as of October 2019), forming a network across Italy and to many countries beyond. Alitalia's slogan is: "Where the journey meets the destination".
Its central hub is at the Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome, with secondary bases in Milan, Palermo, and Naples.
Alitalia has been in the SkyTeam alliance since 2009. SkyTeam is an alliance of different airlines which cooperate to give customers a better service. Alitalia has negotiated agreements on a codeshare basis with other members of SkyTeam, which allow passengers to fly to a number of destinations using their Alitalia ticket.
Between 2009 and 2011, Alitalia renewed its fleet with 34 new aircraft. The airline maintains safety standards of the highest order across its planes.
